Bells

St Dunstan’s present 10 bells were cast in 1806 by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Three were recast in 1952, when all were rehung in a new frame. But Stepney’s bells go much further back in history to ‘Oranges and Lemons’.

It is said Stepney’s are among the finest sounding bells in London. We take great pleasure in ringing them. We regularly ring before Sunday morning service, and practice Thursday evenings between 7.30 and 9.30. Practice always involves a break for tea and good fellowship afterwards in our local pub.

We regularly ring for special services and organize peals and quarter peals, outings and social events. We enjoy occasional visits to other towers and are pleased to welcome visitors to ring at our tower too.

St Dunstan’s had been without a regular band for a number of years. We decided to change that in Spring 2007, when we began recruiting and training ringers. We are very fortunate to draw on a superb network of experienced, committed and dedicated London ringers for help, tuition and encouragement. If you are interested in learning to ring and gaining a group of friends, please contact us: RingAtStepney@yahoo.co.uk
